CBS’s “60 Minutes” this coming weekend gives over the show to interviews with the two presidential candidates. Both candidates were asked whether the country was in a recession.
Mr. Obama: “Oh, I think there’s no doubt that … when the numbers come out, that we are officially in recession.”
Mr. McCain: “Sure. Technically, I don’t know … Americans today don’t care about what the, quote, “technical term” is.
We think there is little more to say, but we always have something to say. Simply this: we believe that the truth is more clear and prefer the answer that doesn’t treat us like we only have sawdust in our heads. We can handle the truth.
You know, we gave a pass to Senator McCain when he confused Sunni and Shia once. However, fusing Latin America and the European country of Spain does indicate a broader problem, a problem that should be noted publicly anywhere and everywhere one has the opportunity to do so in this election season.
Mr. McCain Says:
“I’m willing to meet with any leader,” Mr. McCain said, “who is dedicated to the same principles and philosophy that we are for human rights, democracy and freedom, and I will stand up to those that do not.”
Excerpts taken from NYT: McCain’s Position on Spain
In an ambiguous statement, John McCain refused to rule in or out a meeting with Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero of Spain.
Palin’s email account is hacked and we find very little information. But that’s another story… the point of the hacking is not this bogus red herring paste (her privacy was violated being their outcry) coming from her base. The point is this: Governor Palin is a public official and we the people have no access to her private email account, an account on which she carried out public business.
We don’t care if that government business is counting snowflakes for the annual Alaska Festival of Snowflakes. A publicly elected official is doing the business of the people. Now, it seems we need more regulation in government due to the inability of elected officials to understand the need & legalities surrounding transparency in their actions. A law is necessary regarding email and internet activity on government time doing government business. Screw those who cry that “we the people” need less of a nanny state when it comes to this single issue. In this case, clearly legislation is needed.
We don’t want to invade anyone’s privacy, we just don’t think the business of elected officials is private. Yes yes, public officials may have a private life but their business is not. Hey, she bought the tanning bed on her own money – I don’t care all that much. Well alright, we are curious if she paid for the installation and how she pays that portion of the electricity bill, but that’s another story.
Thoughts from DitW
1. No law protects the privacy of your email account, anywhere. There are laws against illegally accessing systems you have not been granted access to.
2. Palin’s use of a yahoo account circumvents the Freedom of Information Act. She was sending official correspondence as a governor from a private email account. The moment she did that, that email account is arguably public record.
3. Related to #1, hundreds of accounts are compromised a day, just like hers. Does anyone care? Not much, just the people who experience it. The only reason anyone may take action is because she’s running for VP.
4. Hacking personal email accounts is a cruel thing to do. The moment of the Gotcha for the perpetrator rarely matches the humilition to the target. We think email hacking sucks.
