First, let us be clear about defining waving the bloody shirt….
From WIkipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waving_the_bloody_shirt
In the United States of America’s (U.S.) history, “waving the bloody shirt” refers to the demagogic practice of politicians referencing the blood of martyrs or heroes to inspire support or avoid criticism.
The phrase originated with post-bellum politicians using sectionalist animosities of the American Civil War to gain election in the postbellum North from the 1860s to 1880s. The phrase implied that members of the Democratic Party (which garnered much of their support from the “Solid South”) were responsible for the bloodshed of the war and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
Now let me point out a recent incident on the campaign trail that clearly expresses the above. Found here in the NYT Caucus Blog and the actions/statements of Senator John McCain sans editorial found here on YouTube
This incident is such a crass, bloody shirt waving pander, we could barely keep down our lunch upon reading the transcript.
The point is not that soldiers are lost, the point is not that it was nice to give dog tags to Mr. McCain assuming he would somehow understand what they meant to the mother of the fallen son (any mother’s son will do…), the point is not looking to open a “soldiers should only be lauded for their sacrifice” debate, the point simply is to express that “our” Mr. McCain is plucking the lowest of notes on our heart strings.
From where we sit, we find the action deplorable in its dramatic flair. We don’t think McCain himself is deplorable (yet. remains to be seen. our appreciation for him has long since been on the ropes) , just that he has lost sight of the inherent sacrifice, his own honor.
Or.
Perhaps Mr. McCain has become so immersed in this kind of flag wavery that nothing as relates to war is sacred because HE knows from “the inside”.
Alas, Senator… you are loudly waving the bloody dogtags and that is all.
Let us also comment that this statement
“Every once in a while you have an experience that’s very helpful to put into the right priority what this campaign is all about,’’
is wretched speech writing that should be roundly booed even by those who wish to proclaim they are not elitsits. Perhaps bloody shirt waving is what their campaign is all about, in which case they need only be ashamed of that and not the writing. If this is the case, we will continue be ashamed for them becase they’ve fully equated the Afghan War, its death toll, the death of this singular soldier, & etc. as merely having value when used as political offensive in a small stroke. We find it hard to believe that this war only retruns capital to “them” for shirt wavery but that is because we are idealists.
